Developing digital skills and freelancing among refugee women in Nairobi (Kenya)

Professional integration and women's economic rights

There are an estimated 82 million refugees in the world. In Kenya, half of the 80,000 refugees officially welcomed in Nairobi are women. They live in difficult conditions, often at odds with their families and the world of work, having been victims of professional exploitation (many in the informal sector) and/or sexist and sexual violence.

While in Kenya, digital technology is becoming a vector of numerous economic opportunities and the freelance market is experiencing strong growth, these women have little access to it.

Konexio, an association specializing in digital training aimed at empowering refugee women, and its local partner, RefuSHE, have jointly launched́ a training program for refugee women in Kenya to enable them to acquire digital and freelancing skills. The aim is to open up this buoyant market to them and thus help them become economically self-sufficient, thanks to their mastery of digital tools.

In 2022, 52 refugee women have already been trained over a 6-month program. To make the project sustainable, the training will be integrated into RefuSHE's professional support offer and made available on their e-learning platform. This online access will enable a greater number of women to access the courses, to break out of precariousness.

Use of the prize:
The Public Choice Award will enhance the quality of the training course's pedagogical content and help it to be replicated in other regions. What's more, the visibility afforded by this award will give Konexio a valuable boost.
